Last week, the National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) announced that 21 high schools from four states are participating in a pilot program based on international education system models that is designed to transform high schools. Researchers from NCEE who formulated the program, Excellence for All, expect the framework to provide students with access to multiple pathways towards college and careers.

The College Board has recently released the 7th Annual AP Report to the Nation, which details states’ efforts over the last year to increase Advanced Placement (AP) coursetaking, particularly among traditionally underserved student populations.

Last week was a big week for science education.  Results of NCES’ Science 2009: National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) at Grades 4, 8, and 12 were released; in his State of the Union speech, President Obama suggested that we are in the equivalent of “our generation’s Sputnik moment;” and the nation remembered Christa McAuliffe 25 years after she perished in the explosion of the Challenger.

Results of the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in reading and mathematics at grade 12 were released on November 18th and show gains in both reading and mathematics performance.
